Subcommittee Reviews Watershed Proposals

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Agriculture on July 30, 2009. It is reproduced in full below.

Today, Congressman Tim Holden (PA), Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee’s Subcommittee on Conservation, Credit, Energy, and Research, held a hearing to review two watershed proposals that require approval from Congress before they can move forward.

The Subcommittee considered a proposal to address flooding concerns in the 100 year floodplain of the Dunloup Creek Watershed in Fayette and Raleigh counties of West Virginia. The second proposal would restore watershed health and improve habitat for fish and shellfish beds in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. All P.L. 566 watershed proposals that cost more than $5 million must be approved by Congress.

“Today we heard from Congressman Delahunt and the Natural Resources Conservation Service about two important watershed proposals. The P.L. 566 watershed program is oversubscribed and underfunded, but the testimony demonstrated the need for these projects to be authorized, and the common good that may result upon their completion," Subcommittee Chairman Holden said. “Hopefully, we can all work together to ensure that small watershed projects across the country are sound, feasible, and funded."

Written testimony provided by the witnesses is available on the Committee website: http://democrats-agriculture.house.gov/hearings/index.html. A full transcript of the hearing will be posted on the Committee website at a later date.
