The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs on Sept. 1, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

Mr. Putney is currently the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Environment in the State Department’s Bureau of Oceans, Environment and Science. He oversees the work of the Environment Directorate consisting of three offices and 65 staff. The Environment Directorate deals with a broad range of international environmental issues, including environmental quality, conservation of natural resources, water and global climate change.

Previously Mr. Putney served as the Deputy Chief of Mission in Skopje, Macedonia; Political-Economic Section Chief at the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan, Armenia; and Poland Desk Officer. He has also done tours in Moscow, Port of Spain, and Surabaya. He received the 2005 Director General’s Award for Impact and Originality in Reporting. He has an M.A. from the University of Illinois-Chicago and a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin. He speaks Macedonian, Russian, and Indonesian.
