U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield spoke with Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Onal today at the conclusion of her trip to Turkey. She expressed appreciation for Turkey’s generous support for Syrian refugees, who are enriching their host communities. They agreed on the importance of improving the dire humanitarian situation inside Syria and stressed the necessity of continuing UN-facilitated cross-border aid, which provides an essential lifeline for millions of Syrians.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield also expressed U.S. opposition to renewed military operations in northern Syria, which could lead to additional population displacement, risk further destabilizing the fragile situation on the ground, and undermine international coalition efforts to defeat ISIS. She underscored U.S. understanding of legitimate Turkish security interests and emphasized the importance of addressing them through diplomacy and dialogue. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield and Deputy Foreign Minister Onal both expressed hope that the meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee would yield progress and shared a steadfast commitment to a political resolution to the Syrian conflict consistent with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
