DOE announces $40 million to help Americans with energy bills

The Department of Energy announced $40 million in grants and subsidies July 8 to help with rising costs for American families.

The funds will be used to help Americans save money on energy bills, according to a DOE press release.

“Weatherization is a great way to save hundreds of dollars on energy bills, but unfortunately aging electrical systems and structural complications keep homes in disrepair locked out of this money saving benefit,” said Jennifer Granholm, Secretary of Energy, in the release.

Granholm also explained how the funds will be used and praised the Biden administration.

“Today’s funding from DOE doubles down on the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s $3.5 billion investment in weatherization assistance by getting homes weatherization ready, helping thousands of Americans save money on their utility bills, and developing the next generation of a clean energy workforce,” Granholm said.

The $40 million will be provided to 21 organizations and five state agencies who will be tasked with lowering utility costs and increasing efficiency, the release stated. This would lower energy costs and support sustainable energy solutions. The funds are made available through the Weatherization Assistance Program.

"Weatherizing homes reduces energy costs – especially for low-income families,” the DOE said in a tweet July 9. “Our $40M+ will help expand these services for these households to keep more money in their pockets and develop our clean energy workforce."
