Pete Buttigieg, Department of Transportation secretary, said the department recently published the first-ever Airline Passengers with Disabilities Bill of Rights.

“Today’s announcements are the latest steps toward ensuring an air travel system that works for everyone,” Buttigieg said in a July 8 press release. “Whether you’re a parent expecting to sit together with your young children on a flight, a traveler with a disability navigating air travel, or a consumer traveling by air for the first time in a while, you deserve safe, accessible, affordable, and reliable airline service.”

The DOT is also asking airlines to seat children next to their parents without incurring any additional fees, the release stated.

The goal of the initiative is to provide disabled passengers with information, so they understand their rights and are equipped with the tools they need when traveling, according to the DOT. The guidance also provides airlines with information on how they should accommodate disabled passengers.
