Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo charged the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship with identifying and developing roadmaps for three transformative achievements.
She told NACIE that she put the charge on them because technology innovation and entrepreneurship fuel global competitiveness, according to a July 12 release.
“I strongly believe that America’s diversity is our core strength and our greatest competitive advantage,” Raimondo said in the release. “But millions of workers are sitting on the sidelines of our economy.”
Shifting paradigms like moonshots make lives happier, safer and healthier and inspire innovators to build and achieve more, she said, according to the release. They require not only innovation but also collaboration and leadership across technologies, Raimondo said. The Department of Commerce also asked NACIE to recommend ways to improve support of innovation and entrepreneurship, from growing a skilled STEM workforce to remove barriers entrepreneurs face.
The department hit the ground running with the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Science Foundation providing an overview of emerging technologies and why they’re critical. An overview of how other countries approached National Entrepreneurship Strategies was presented by the Boston Consulting Group, according to the release. NACIE members next formed working groups focused on certain innovation levers.
