General Motors, Pilot Travel Centers and EVgo said they would work together to build a network of 2,000 charging stalls at 500 Pilot stations across the U.S, Fox2 Detroit reported.

Construction will start this summer with chargers going into operation in 2023 and the network finished by 2024, the station said.

"The infrastructure of electric vehicles needs to be a sort of combination of locations like Pilot," Stephanie Brinley, principal analyst of S&P Global Mobility, a division of S&P Global, said, the station reported. "It probably needs this level of  support from many different voices to make it work."

When complete, the network located along highways, will help President Joe Biden's administration reach its goal of 500,000 charging stations as promised during the campaign, Fox2 said.

Pilot currently has more than 750 locations in 44 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces.

GM's goal is to only build electric passenger vehicles by 2035, and it has pledged to have 30 of them available globally by 2025, Fox2 reported.

"It’s exciting to see leading companies respond by setting their own ambitious goals and investing in a convenient, reliable, and affordable nationwide charging network," National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy told Fox 2.

Nearly 124,000 public EV outlets are currently available in the U.S. at more than 49,000 stations, the station reported.
