Bousquet: West Valley Demonstration Project 'demonstrated the benefits of using the rail line for waste operations'

The Department of Energy's Office of Environmental Management and its cleanup contractor at the West Valley Demonstration Project recently restored land in New York.

The West Valley Demonstration Project is a 150-acre area located approximately 35 miles south of Buffalo, N.Y. According to a June 28 news release, EM and WVDP restored land in the region where they removed soil and land structure to construct a groundwater treatment system.

“This project demonstrated the benefits of using the rail line for waste operations, as well as for increased safety, efficiency and cost savings,” Steve Bousquet, EM-WVDP deputy federal project director for the Main Plant Process Building demolition, said in the release. “Our dedicated employees continue to find ways to further improve our cleanup efforts as we look for ways to safely accelerate decommissioning and remediation efforts for the future.”

The groundwater treatment system was put in place to address a plume that originated from the Main Plant Process Building, the release reported.

“Our employees and subcontractors did an excellent job in safely moving this project from paper to completion,” Linda Michalczak, CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley projects manager, said in the release. “This accomplishment speaks volumes on the importance of solid communication, following procedures, using lessons learned and teamwork.”
