Defendant Grabbed Victims' Purses, Injuring One of Them
WASHINGTON - Timothy Stewart, 36, of Washington, D.C., has been sentenced to five years in prison for attacking two women in separate incidents early May 30, 2016, in Northwest Washington, U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips announced today.
Stewart pled guilty in June 2016, in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, to charges of robbery and attempted assault with significant bodily injury. He was sentenced on Aug. 8, 2016, by the Honorable Danya A. Dayson. Following his prison term, Stewart will be placed on three years of supervised release.
According to the government’s evidence, in the early morning hours of May 30, 2016, Stewart ran up to the first victim in the 1300 block of 11th Street NW and snatched her purse from her shoulder, breaking the strap. Moments later, in the area of 9th and R Streets NW, he grabbed the second victim’s purse from her right shoulder. As a result, this victim and Stewart fell to the ground, causing her to sustain a fractured shoulder and a concussion. Stewart fled, but officers with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) arrested him a short time later in the 2200 block of 14th Street NW. The victim’s cellphones were recovered.
In announcing the sentence, U.S. Attorney Phillips commended the work of those who investigated the case from the Metropolitan Police Department. He also acknowledged the efforts of those who worked on the case from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, including Victim/Witness Advocate Diana Lim, Paralegal Specialist Debra McPherson, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Monica Trigoso, who investigated the case and handled the sentencing.
