United States Attorney Ron Parsons announced that a physician working in Aberdeen, South Dakota, convicted of distributing oxycodone, was sentenced on May 14, 2019, by U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann.
Troy Edward Adolfson, age 47, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $20,000, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Adolfson was indicted for Distribution of a Controlled Substance by a federal grand jury on June 6, 2018. He pled guilty on Nov. 14, 2018.
While working at a hospital in Aberdeen, Adolfson wrote prescriptions for oxycodone to others, who filled the prescriptions and gave the pills to Adolfson. He gave these people some of the oxycodone and a cash “tip" for filling the prescriptions. He illegally prescribed approximately 1,400 pills of oxycodone in this manner.
This case was investigated by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer D. Mammenga prosecuted the case.
Adolfson was ordered to report on Aug. 13, 2019, to begin serving his sentence.
