NEW ORLEANS - U.S. Attorney Peter G. Strasser announced that JORGE MEJIA-COLIN, age 28, a native of Mexico, pleaded guilty Oct. 31, 2019 to a one-count bill of information charging him with illegal re-entry of a removed alien.
According to the court documents, MEJIA-COLIN was previously removed from the United States on Sept. 30, 2008. He was later found in the Eastern District of Louisiana on July 24, 2019, and had not received permission from the Attorney General of the United States or the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to reenter.
MEJIA-COLIN faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 2 years, a fine of $250,000, one year of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment fee. U.S. District Judge Barry W. Ashe set sentencing for Dec. 12, 2019.
U.S. Attorney Strasser praised the work of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations in investigating this matter. Assistant United States Attorney Jon Maestri is in charge of the prosecution.
