Phoenix Man Sentenced to Prison for Distribution of Fentanyl Resulting in Death

PHOENIX, Ariz. - On Nov. 25, 2019, Melvin Woods, 26, of Phoenix, Ariz., was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Dominic W. Lanza to 84 months of imprisonment followed by five years of supervised release. Woods previously pleaded guilty to distribution of fentanyl resulting in death.

On Aug. 1, 2018, Woods sold blue “M-30" pills that looked like oxycodone to a customer at a pool store in Phoenix. Shortly after smoking one of these pills, the customer died from a fentanyl overdose.

The investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Phoenix Police Department. The prosecution was handled by D.J. Pashayan, Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of Arizona, Phoenix.
