NEW ORLEANS - U.S. Attorney Peter Strasser announced today that NAZARIO CRUZ-MUNOZ, age 35, was sentenced on June 10, 2020 on a one-count indictment for illegal reentry of a removed alien in violation of Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a) by U. S. District Judge Ivan Lemelle.
According to the indictment, NAZARIO CRUZ-MUNOZ (“CRUZ"), reentered the United States after he was previously deported on July 23, 2015. CRUZ faced a maximum term of imprisonment of two years, a maximum fine of $250,000, a maximum term of supervised release of one year, and a mandatory $100 special assessment. CRUZ pled guilty as charged to the indictment and was sentenced on the same date to credit for time served. He has been detained since Jan. 28, 2020. He will be turned over to federal immigration authorities for deportation back to Mexico.
U.S. Attorney Strasser praised the work of the Louisiana State Police and United States Customs and Border Protection in investigating this matter. Assistant U. S. Attorney Carter K. D. Guice, Jr. is in charge of the prosecution.
