Jury Convicts Defendant Of Double Murder On Indian Reservation

RENO, Nev. - A federal jury convicted a Fort McDermitt Shoshone Paiute Tribe member today for murdering two women who were also members of the Tribe.

According to court documents and evidence presented during trial, on Jan. 31, 2018, Stoney Prior (43) shot and killed two people on the Fort McDermitt Indian Reservation, at the home of one of the victims. Both victims were members of the Fort McDermitt Shoshone Paiute Tribe.

Prior was found guilty of two-counts of second-degree murder in Indian Country. U.S. District Judge Larry R. Hicks scheduled sentencing for Nov. 16, 2021.

Acting U.S. Attorney Christopher Chiou for the District of Nevada made the announcement.

This case was a joint investigation by the FBI and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, with assistance from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Penelope Brady and Richard Casper are prosecuting the case.
