WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Labor today announced an incremental award of $1.3 million to the Cherokee Nation to support continued disaster-relief employment and employment and training services in response to the coronavirus pandemic’s effects on its people.
The department’s Employment and Training Administration administers National Dislocated Worker Grants and, in July 2020, awarded an emergency award of $3 million. The department later awarded a supplemental award of up to $4 million with an initial release of $1.3 million.
The incremental award announced today brings the total project funds awarded to $5.6 million. The Cherokee Nation will use the funds to deliver employment and training services and provide humanitarian support to eligible individuals.
The grant is one of 64 COVID-19 Dislocated Worker Grants awarded by the department to help address the workforce-related effects of the coronavirus public health emergency.
Supported by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act , NDWGs expand the service capacity of dislocated worker programs at the state and local levels temporarily by providing assistance in response to unexpected economic events that cause significant job losses.
