House Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) released the following statement in response to reports that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been coordinating with Big Tech to censor Americans.
“President Joe Biden and his administration are on a dangerous mission to institutionalize censorship of American voices and control the narrative to benefit their political agenda. The actions taken by the CDC to coordinate with and intimidate Big Tech to police content online are an attack on the First Amendment and our fundamental right to free speech. House Energy and Commerce Republicans have repeatedly condemned these troubling actions carried out by progressive administration officials and their cozy relationships with Big Tech and demanded accountability for their coordinated censorship and manipulation of the truth. We cannot allow this administration to be the arbiters of truth online, nor should we outsource our freedoms to TikTok. The answer to speech that we disagree with should always be more speech.”
House Energy and Commerce Republicans have demanded for months that President Biden and his administration cease their efforts to censor Americans online.
July 2021 — 189 Republican Members of Congress urged the Biden administration to abandon their censorship mission and respond to inquiries regarding their coordination with social media companies to censor Americans.
March 2022 — Republican Leaders condemned the Surgeon General’s ongoing pressure campaign on Big Tech to silence Americans.
April 2022 — Leader Rodgers urged Democrats and President Biden to abandon their censorship mission and that the establishment of a ‘Disinformation Governance Board’ was un-American.
May 2022 – Leader Rodgers and E&C Republican leaders asked Big Tech how they will handle Biden’s ‘Ministry of Truth’ attempts to censor Americans.
