Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently lauded the passing of legislation to boost semiconductor production in the United States.

The House of Representatives passed the $280 billion Chips and Science Act with a vote of 243-187, according to a July 28 Data Center Dynamics report. The legislation is designed to boost domestic production of semiconductors to lower costs and increase national security by decreasing the nation's reliance on foreign semiconductors.

"Making more here in the USA - including components for smartphones, laptops & safer/cleaner vehicles - is a key priority," Buttigieg wrote in a July 28 tweet. "Great to see Congress sending the bipartisan CHIPS & Science Act to @POTUS’ desk."

President Joe Biden shared his excitement over the passage of the bill in a statement released by the White House July 28.

"Today, the House passed a bill that will make cars cheaper, appliances cheaper, and computers cheaper," the statement read. "It will lower the costs of everyday goods. And it will create high-paying manufacturing jobs across the country and strengthen U.S. leadership in the industries of the future."

"The Chips and Science Act is exactly what we need to be doing to grow our economy right now,” Biden stated. “By making more semiconductors in the United States, this bill will increase domestic manufacturing and lower costs for families. And it will strengthen our national security by making us less dependent on foreign sources of semiconductors. This bill includes important guardrails to ensure that companies receiving taxpayer dollars invest in America and that union workers are building new manufacturing plants across the country."

The bill now heads to Biden’s desk for his signature.
