SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Bureau of Reclamation has released for public review a draft Initial Study/Environmental Assessment for the proposed West Stanislaus Irrigation District’s Fish Screen Intake Project, to screen an existing 347 cubic feet per second unscreened diversion along the San Joaquin River. The project meets the design requirement of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and National Marine Fisheries Service.
Under the Central Valley Project Improvement Act, Reclamation is authorized to assist the state of California in developing and implementing measures to avoid losses of juvenile anadromous fish resulting from unscreened diversions on the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers and their tributaries. The project is needed to minimize diversion impacts to out-migrating anadromous fish on the San Joaquin River without impairing the district’s ability to divert water consistent with its existing water rights. The new intake facility would be located at an existing intake canal and would not increase the district’s overall diversion capacity from the San Joaquin River.
The draft IS/EA was prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and is available at https://www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/nepa_project_details.php?Project_ID=30029.
