YUMA, Ariz. - Reclamation’s Yuma Area Office announced today the reopening of Phil Swing Park at Imperial Dam following an extended closure to accommodate infrastructure improvement efforts. Phil Swing Park, known for its fishing and recreational opportunities, is located adjacent to Imperial Dam along the Colorado River.
In October 2019, Reclamation and the Imperial Irrigation District (IID) jointly closed Phil Swing Park for an extended period to accommodate upgrade of the dam’s roller gates, installation of new sluiceway gates, and electrical infrastructure.
“As extensive improvements to the dam involved the operation of heavy equipment and staging of construction materials, we had to close public access to the Phil Swing Park area to ensure public safety throughout the duration of the ongoing improvement efforts," said Michael Norris, Area Manager of Reclamation’s Yuma Area Office. “Now that these projects are substantially complete, we are reopening the park to public use."
The IID, who operates and maintains the dam and surrounding grounds on behalf of Reclamation and other water district entities, provided oversight for the infrastructure improvement projects.
Any questions regarding the reopening of Phil Swing Park should be addressed to Mr. David Escobar, General Superintendent, Operations & Maintenance All-American Canal-River Division, Imperial Irrigation District, at (760) 339-9747.
Imperial Dam is located approximately 18 miles northeast of Yuma, Arizona and serves as the primary diversion point for water flowing from the Colorado River to the Southern California, Southwest Arizona, and Mexico.
