FARMINGTON, NM - The Bureau of Reclamation recently selected Bart Deming as the construction engineer and manager of the Upper Colorado Basin Region’s Four Corners Construction Office. In this role, Deming will oversee the office that is responsible for the design and construction of the Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project, among other duties.

Deming most recently served as the deputy construction engineer for the FCCO where he joined as a civil engineer in 2012. He has been fully involved in helping design, construct, and manage NGWSP since Reclamation broke ground on the project that same year. NGWSP is the cornerstone project in the Navajo-San Juan Water Rights Settlement in New Mexico that will provide a clean and sustainable water supply to the eastern section of the Navajo Nation, southwestern part of the Jicarilla Apache Nation, and the city of Gallup, New Mexico.

“Bart brings a wealth of experience from the field and specifically with the NGWSP. He has collaborated with and established successful working relationships with employees, tribes, stakeholders, and the NGWSP community," said Upper Colorado Basin Regional Director Wayne Pullan. “He is a strong and capable leader, ready to build upon the work of his predecessors."

As Deputy Construction Engineer for the FCCO, Deming was also the project manager for the Navajo Nation Municipal Pipeline, a component of the Animas-La Plata project, and the lead on the highly successful NGWSP Cutter Lateral Water Treatment Plant design-build. The Cutter Lateral has delivered drinking water to 6,000 people in eight Navajo chapters along the Cutter Lateral for the past year and was recently recognized with three 2021 national design-build awards by the Design-Build Institute of America.

“I’m very excited and honored to take on the challenge of completing the NGWSP and to help fulfill the federal government’s trust responsibilities to the Navajo Nation with the implementation of this settlement by providing a critically needed drinking water supply to the Navajo people," said Deming. “It’s with great pride that I am able to continue to work together with the great staff in FCCO and our partners to improve people’s lives and opportunities by providing a resource most of us take for granted."

Deming also was recently named as the chair for the federal team implementing the Navajo-San Juan Indian Water Rights Settlement. Previous to joining Reclamation, he worked for 15-years as a civil engineer and project manager for private consulting firms, designing and constructing municipal and industrial water systems, transportation, and urban renewal projects. He graduated with honors from Colorado State University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering and holds a professional engineering license in Colorado.

Deming’s father and grandfather also served their careers with Reclamation primarily in the Upper Colorado Basin Region, making Bart a third-generation Reclamation employee. Their story was featured here: https://www.usbr.gov/newsroom/newsroomold/stories/detail.cfm?RecordID=73186
