On August 6, Administrator Samantha Power arrived in Bogotá, Colombia, where she is leading the Presidential Delegation to attend the Inauguration of His Excellency Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego as President of the Republic of Colombia. Administrator Power began her trip by hosting a roundtable discussion with human rights defenders to hear directly about their experiences, work to support conflict victims, and efforts to advance implementation of the 2016 Peace Accord.
Administrator Power thanked participants for their tireless commitment to supporting the Colombian people and for raising their voices to create a more peaceful, safe, inclusive, and democratic society. The Administrator expressed her deep respect for the critical work of human rights defenders to keep their communities safe and advocate on behalf of those impacted by decades of armed conflict, including women and children, displaced persons, Afro-Colombians, and Indigenous Peoples. She pledged continued support from the United States to the Colombian people for advancing human rights, security, and inclusion. Following the roundtable, Administrator Power toured an exhibit by the award-winning photographer Jesús Abad Colorado that documents the history of Colombia’s armed conflict.
Later, Administrator Power attended a dinner hosted by Iván Duque, President of Colombia. The Administrator expressed gratitude for 200 years of strong partnership between the United States and Colombia.
