Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo thanked President Joe Biden and Congressional leaders for getting the CHIPS and Science Act passed and signed into law.

She addressed Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other members of Congress – both Democrats and Republicans – during a signing ceremony for the act, according to am Aug. 10 Commerce Department news release.

“The CHIPS and Science Act is a historic investment that will help us meet your goal of revitalizing our domestic manufacturing economy,” Raimondo said, according to the release.

Passage of the CHIPS and Science Act came at an urgent time, she said, the release reported. The United States' overreliance on foreign manufacturers makes it vulnerable as semiconductors serve as lynchpins of U.S. economic and national security. The investments provided through the act will enable the United States to build its own semiconductor ecosystem, she said.

“Today – thanks to President Biden’s leadership and the bipartisan work in Congress – we’re strengthening U.S. leadership in the industries of the future and supporting the innovators that power those industries,” Raimondo said, according to the release.

With this passage will come high-quality, good-paying jobs, another generation of American innovation and more resilient supply chains, the release reported.
