Neal Statement On Latest Use Of USMCA’S Rapid Response Labor Mechanism

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement applauding the U.S. Trade Representative and Department of Labor’s announcement that a remediation agreement has been reached in a case against Stellantis-owned Teksid auto plant in Mexico:

“Today’s announcement by U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai and Department of Labor Secretary Marty Walsh that another remediation agreement has been reached under USMCA’s Labor Rapid Response Mechanism is exactly why House Democrats fought so hard to secure this tool for workers. As part of this agreement, 36 Los Mineros union workers at Stellantis’ Teksid auto plant are not only back at work with their union present, but they have also received back pay and improved conditions going forward.

“Over the last year, this groundbreaking trade policy tool has put both American workers and those in partner countries first. I applaud the Biden Administration for their increased use of this mechanism and for demonstrating our nation’s commitment to worker-centric trade agreements and policies.

“Union elections in Mexico are on the rise, and enhanced enforcement will continue to deliver concrete gains for workers. The Ways and Means Committee is proud to partner with the Biden Administration on building upon this progress and ensuring workers remain central in all of our international trade and economic engagement.”
