House Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) issued the following statement on the notice of a proposed Federal Trade Commission (FTC) privacy rulemaking. She reiterated that ensuring strong privacy protections for Americans requires a robust legislative process in Congress and the establishment of one national standard.
“I strongly share the goal of enacting robust privacy protections for Americans. That should be achieved by the American people speaking through their elected representatives and not through executive action. More than 80 percent of people polled support the pillars of the American Data Privacy and Protection Act, which passed out of the Energy and Commerce Committee 53-2. Unlike a FTC rule, it includes a national privacy standard. One standard—clearly directed by Congress—is paramount to minimizing the amount of peoples’ information companies are allowed to collect, process, and transfer. The American Data Privacy and Protection Act continues to be the best path forward to rein in Big Tech, protect people’s private information from hostile nations like China, and ensure that companies face real consequences for tracking our kids’ data or using their information to exploit them for profit.”
