Leader Rodgers: One National Privacy Standard is Essential to Protect Americans’ Data

House Energy and Commerce Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) issued the following statement in response to Speaker Pelosi’s statement on the American Data Privacy and Protection Act and the importance of the legislation’s preemption provisions to ensure all Americans have the same privacy protections, no matter where they are.

“California—the home of Big Tech and the societal ills it has brought—should not be dictating privacy and data security rules for the rest of the country. Advocacy groups agree, the American Data Privacy and Protection Act includes the most robust privacy protections to date in the U.S., even stronger than California. I have been clear for years now that federal preemption is essential in order to protect all Americans no matter where they live.

Creating one national standard is necessary to achieving this goal. More than 80 percent of people polled support the pillars of the American Data Privacy and Protection Act, which passed out of the Energy and Commerce Committee 53-2.  I remain committed to working to enact and implement this historic, bipartisan national privacy standard into law.”
