The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the Port of Los Angeles $3 million in grants for a gateway project.

The project will help reduce congestion and, according to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, will use artificial intelligence to streamline cargo staging and returns, as reported by an Aug. 10 Fox 11 article.

"We're pleased to support these innovative solutions that will improve driving and public transit for Americans in urban, suburban and rural areas alike," Buttigieg said, according to Fox.

The DOT's Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment Program has awarded $45.2 million to ten projects using the aforementioned advanced technologies to improve mobility, Fox reported.

"ATCMTD grants promote innovations that help expand access to transportation for communities in rural areas and cities alike, improve connectivity, and prepare America's transportation systems for the future," Acting Federal Highway Administrator Stephanie Pollack said, according to Fox.

The Port of Los Angeles Maritime Support Facility Access/Terminal Island Rail System Project also received $20 million Aug. 10, Fox reported. The money will be used for the construction of a four-lane rail roadway grade separation in Terminal Island at the center of the Ports of Los Angeles-Long Beach complex. The funding is provided by separate grants from a DOT program.
