BLM and Partners to Host 2014 Anchorage Weed Smackdown

The following press releases was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management on Aug. 6, 2014. It is reproduced in full below.

ANCHORAGE - This Saturday (Aug. 9) the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will team up with area weed warriors for the fourth annual Anchorage Weed Smackdown. Join us at Valley of the Moon Park from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m. as we declare war on European bird cherry (Mayday) trees. The event offers food, fun, great prizes and the opportunity to help protect Alaska’s environment.

Mayday trees are invading riparian forests in Anchorage, crowding out native plants that moose and salmon depend on for food. In the past three years, hundreds of Smackdown volunteers have removed 20 tons of these invaders from our local forests.

The BLM is a charter member of the Anchorage Cooperative Weed Management Area, a joint effort of government agencies, non-profit groups, and private citizens who fight the spread of non-native invasive weeds in the Anchorage area.
