Las Vegas - Crews from the Bureau of Land Management will begin a wildfire fuels reduction project October 20 in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The project is expected to take about three weeks.
The crews will use herbicide to treat non-native grass to create fuel breaks that are intended to reduce wildfire risk and help protect Red Rock Canyon NCA infrastructure and nearby homes. The treatment area includes 400 acres of fuel breaks along Moenkopi and Calico Basin Roads, and around the Visitors’ Center. This will be a reapplication to some of the fuel breaks from a project in 2012.
Warning signs will be posted at the treated areas. Visitors are asked to avoid the treated areas by staying on designated and marked trails. Information sheets on the herbicide will be available at the Visitors’ Center and the Southern Nevada District Office.
