GRAND JUNCTION, Colo - Reservations for summer camping will be available online beginning today for the popular Ruby-Horsethief section of the Colorado River.
Reservations are always required for river runners camping along the Colorado River from Loma to Westwater and camping is restricted to designated camp sites. The Bureau of Land Management charges fees for reservations during the high use season May 1 - Sept, 30, to improve management and camping opportunities in the river corridor. Reservations can be made up to 60 days prior to the date requested.
“The fees we charge during the peak of our camping season give us an opportunity to improve user experiences," said River Ranger Troy Schnurr. “Visitors tell me they appreciate the improvements they’ve seen because of the camping fees."
The number of people camping on the river has steadily increased each year since the permit system was instituted. Almost 21,000 river runners camped along the Ruby-Horsethief section of the Colorado River in 2016. Those visits generated approximately $100,000 in revenue that the BLM is using for boat launch and campsite improvements, permit administration, and river ranger patrols.
