WORLAND, Wyo. - The Bureau of Land Management advises that beginning Sept. 11, travel near the Washakie Midstream Gas Plant, approximately 4 miles east of Worland, will be temporarily restricted for public safety due to the potential for high levels of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas.
The gas plant road north of U.S. Highway 16 will be restricted to authorized personnel during workover operations for an injection well. Travelers will need to use alternate routes to access North Rattlesnake Ridge and avoid the gas plant road until the barricades are removed. The maintenance operation is expected to last up to a month.
H2S occurs naturally in crude petroleum and natural gas. The potential for high concentration levels of H2S is dependent upon a number of factors, including wind and other weather conditions. Health effects vary with duration and level of exposure. High levels of exposure can be fatal.
