ROSWELL, N.M. - Beginning in late September, the Bureau of Land Management will be conducting prescribed burn operations north of the town of Lincoln. The burn unit includes 13 acres of cut and piled piñon and juniper located on the north side of the Rio Bonito in Tract 3 of the Rio Bonito Acquired Lands, adjacent to Lincoln. Because weather and fuel conditions can affect the pace of this work, the operation may take several days to complete.
The purpose of the prescribed burning is to reduce the amount of vegetation available for wildfire, as well as to improve watershed conditions and wildlife habitat.
Smoke from the burns may be visible from Capitan, Lincoln, Ruidoso and other surrounding communities. Signs will be posted along roadways to inform motorists that may potentially be affected by smoke. Motorists are reminded to use caution by reducing speed and watching for fire personnel and equipment. The BLM encourages public land users to continue to be careful with fire.
