LOVELOCK, Nev. - The Rocky Fire started on private land just after 7:15 p.m. on June 23 approximately 20 miles north of Lovelock. The fire was determined to be human caused. During the course of the investigation it was found that a vehicle drove and parked over dry grass which lead to the dry vegetation catching on fire and burning over 1,613 acres. The investigation is still ongoing and BLM cannot release any other information at this time.
It is important to remember that summer is here. Temperatures are increasing and humidity has been extremely low, further drying vegetation. The dry vegetation can easily ignite when in contact with heat sources such as mufflers, exhaust pipes and catalytic converters. Make sure not to park or drive over dry vegetation and be aware when traveling on 2 track roads. When trailering vehicles, endure chains are not dragging on the ground. Never, ever toss a cigarette out the window.
