(BUTTE, Mont.) - As the first flakes of winter drift through the sky and area lakes start to form lacy crusts of ice along the shore, the Bureau of Land Management’s Butte Field Office is preparing its recreation sites for the change in seasons.
While the BLM sites at Holter and Hauser lakes near Helena remain open to the public, most services and amenities have been shuttered for the season.
Earlier last week, the boat docks at the campgrounds at the lakes moved to dry land for the winter. Drinking water is no longer available to the public at any of the sites as the systems have been winterized.
“We had a very successful summer season at our recreation areas, and a big part of that was due to our outstanding volunteers, seasonal crews, and tireless BLM employees," said Butte Field Manager Scott Haight. “But now it’s time to reduce our services at the sites and plan for next summer."
For the 2018 season, volunteers donated 12,317 hours and 1,609 days to help keep these recreation sites going, Haight noted.
