BLM Seeks Public Comment on the Direct Sale of the Reversionary Interest for Recreational and Public Purposes Act Patent – Unionville Cemetery

The following press releases was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management on Nov. 27, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

WINNEMUCCA, Nev - The Bureau of Land Management Humboldt River Field Office is seeking public comment on a proposal for the direct sale of the United States’ reversionary interest in the Unionville Cemetery to Pershing County for fair market value. The cemetery is located in the town of Unionville, approximately 17 miles south of Mill City, Nevada, in Pershing County. BLM issued Pershing County a patent for the 10-acre cemetery under the Recreation and Public Purposes Act on May 29, 2020, retaining a reversionary interest. If the BLM approves the proposed sale, Pershing County would continue using the historic cemetery for family members closely related to those already buried there and may create a new addition for other new burials.

“The conveyance from the BLM of 10 acres of the Unionville cemetery will preserve the historical heritage and use of the site," said Winnemucca District Manager, Ester McCullough.

This proposal follows the guidelines of Secretarial Order 3373 (SO 3373), “Evaluating Public Access in BLM Land Disposals and Exchanges," which directs BLM to adequately weigh public access for outdoor recreation - including hunting and fishing - when determining the appropriateness of the disposal or exchange of public lands. The sale of the reversionary interest does not affect public access to outdoor recreational opportunities on public land.

The Notice of Realty Action for the disposal of the reversionary interest will published in the Federal Register on Nov. 27, 2020 which started a comment period of 45 days. You may submit comments regarding the proposal to sell the reversionary interest in the 10-acre Unionville Cemetery parcel in Pershing County by mail at:
