REDDING, Calif. - Bureau of Land Management fire crews will be conducting pile burning projects west of Redding as conditions allow throughout February. Smoke will be visible near individual projects and could linger for up to three days after the piles are burned. Crews will patrol the project areas.
Projects are planned for the Swasey Recreation Area, and near Whispering Pines, Middle Creek and Hoadley Peak. Burning will take place only on days when weather and fuel moisture conditions allow for safe and successful burning. Burns will be conducted according to carefully designed burn plans that detail allowable conditions and personnel requirements for each project.
Small trees and brush were cut and piled in previous projects. These prescribed burns are part of a larger strategy to reduce buildup of hazardous fuels, moderate wildland fire intensity, improve conditions for wildlife and recreation visitors and increase public safety.
