Several prescribed burning activities are scheduled from Dec. 27, 2021, to March 1, 2022, across seven units within the Mount Lewis Field Office area.
Burning activities will be intermittent, not occurring every day throughout the burn window, as five to seven days of favorable weather are needed to burn. If favorable weather conditions do not happen before March, the burns may be postponed until a window of acceptable conditions exists.
In total, there are approximately 500 piles across the seven units. Three units are just north of Eureka, Nev., and four units are between Battle Mountain and Austin, Nev. Smoke may be visible while burning along Highway 305 in Lander County and Highway 276 in Eureka County.
The piles are the result of two years’ worth of fuels-reduction efforts where crews have cut woody vegetation and piled it to help reduce hazardous wildland fire-fuel building up along roads. Now that the piled brush has had time to cure, burning the piles is the last step in the fuels-reduction efforts.
This burn window notice is intended to inform the public while giving the Battle Mountain District Fire Crews the flexibility needed to perform burning activities during favorable weather conditions and in the safest manner possible.
