The building, referred to as the Energy and Minerals Research Facility (EMRF), would provide a new home for the Central Energy Resource Science Center and Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center, which are currently located on the Denver Federal Center (DFC) campus in Lakewood, CO. In addition, the building would also house staff from the Colorado School of Mines.
USGS facilities on the DFC campus are deteriorating and are no longer suitable for laboratory operations. The isolated location and poor environmental control of these facilities inhibits collaborative research and poses risks to costly laboratory instruments. Funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed in November of 2021, the project would benefit both USGS and Colorado School of Mines by providing laboratories capable of cutting-edge research, suitable facilities for precision equipment, and opportunities for collaborative research between the school and agency.
Information about the EMRF will be made available to the public through the USGS websites linked below and further announcements regarding opportunities for public comment on the project will be announced in the coming months.
