Burmese nationals and habitual residents are eligible to temporarily stay in the U.S. until they can safely return to Burma under an extension of the temporary protected status.
Temporary protected status for Burma (Myanmar) has been extended an additional 18 months, from Nov. 26 to May 25, 2024, because of continued violence, human rights abuses and more stemming from a February 2021 military coup, a U.S. Department of Homeland Security news release reported.
“The people of Burma are continuing to suffer a complex and deteriorating humanitarian crisis due the military coup and security forces’ brutal violence against civilians,” Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas said in the release. “Under this extension and redesignation, Burmese nationals and habitual residents will be eligible to temporarily stay in the United States until conditions in the country improve and individuals can safely return.”
Also, a redesignation will allow “Burmese nationals (and individuals having no nationality who last habitually resided in Burma)” living in the U.S. as of Sept. 25 to be eligible for temporary protected status, the release said.
