Lyons: 'Unlawfully present fugitive with an international arrest warrant' apprehended in Connecticut

An woman wanted on charges of fraud and embezzlement in Ecuador was apprehended by Enforcement and Removal Operations officers with Boston's Fugitive Operations Team.

According to a March 8 news release, the 38-year-old woman was arrested in New Britain, Conn., Feb. 27.

“Crimes like fraud and embezzlement are often mistaken as victimless crimes, but that could not be farther from the truth," Todd Lyons, ERO Boston Field Office director, said in the release. "This is yet another example of an unlawfully present fugitive with an international arrest warrant attempting to escape the justice that her victims are owed; justice that will now be enforced due to our team in Hartford successfully locating and apprehending her.”

The woman came the U.S. about 10 years ago through Miami, the release reported. She initially held a temporary tourist visa which would have allowed her to stay in the country legally for six months. Her visa expired in February 2014, but she continued living in the country.

Ecuadorian law enforcement officials from the Criminal Judicial Unit in Pastaza Province in Eastern Ecuador issued an international criminal warrant against the woman on charges of fraud and embezzlement in 2017, the release stated. Officials were notified about her possible presence in the New England-area during a review of outstanding immigration fugitive cases.

The woman was taken into custody without any issues. According to the release, she was placed into U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement custody until removal proceedings are completed.

The release noted that, of the 46,396 noncitizens with criminal pasts arrested by the ERO last year, 198,498 had associated charges and convictions which included 21,531 assault-related crimes, 8,164 sexual assault-related offenses, 5,554 weapons offenses, 1,501 homicide offenses and 1,114 kidnapping-related charges.
