Murray: 'I’m glad we were able to confirm this highly qualified nominee to this important position'

Sen. Patty Muray, D-Wash., applauded the Senate confirmation of Lisa Gomez by a 49-36 vote to serve as assistant secretary of Labor for the Employee Benefits Security Administration.

Murray pushed for months to get Gomez confirmed, including speaking on the floor in support of the nomination earlier this year and releasing a statement reiterating that support to get the Senate to act on her nomination, according to a Sept. 29 news release.

“I’m glad we were able to confirm this highly qualified nominee to this important position overseeing employer-sponsored health and retirement benefits — a financial cornerstone for so many families in Washington state and across the country,” Murray, chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions said, according to the release.

She said, with the job’s massive responsibilities to help retirees recover benefits to which they are entitled, enforcing protections for people who get health care coverage through their job and overseeing retirement, health and other welfare benefit plans, it was important Employee Benefits Security Administration got an experienced leader like Gomez, Murray said, according to the release.

People across the U.S. can rest easy knowing Gomez will work to protect their futures and savings and ensure they get the benefits they deserve under federal law, according to Murray, the release said.
