NPS Reopens Bodie Island Spit

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on June 27, 2006. It is reproduced in full below.

Effective today, Cape Hatteras National Seashore has lifted the nighttime closure on Bodie Island Spit located 1 mile south of Ramp 4. The area had been closed since last Friday night for resource protection of an American Oystercatcher and newly hatched chick. The adult American Oystercatcher and chick are feeding within the pre-nesting closure area near the pond.

“We would like to thank the visiting public for their cooperation and compliance of this temporary closure. We are also happy to be able to lift these closures whenever possible. While it is our responsibility to protect these birds, we also wish to provide our visitors with positive experiences on the Seashore," stated Outer Banks Group Superintendent Mike Murray.
