Point Reyes Prescribed Fire Along Limantour Fuel Break

Point Reyes Prescribed Fire Along Limantour Fuel Break

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Oct. 23, 2006. It is reproduced in full below.

A prescribed fire is scheduled for Tuesday, October 24 along the Limantour fuel break. This 35-acre burn will reduce the hazardous fuels along Limantour Road and is part of a strategic fuel break. The burn is scheduled to begin around 10:00 am and be completed by mid-afternoon. This burn will cause some smoke but will only be conducted if all conditions (weather patterns, wind direction, relative humidity, etc.) and other approvals are met. The burn will take place between Limantour Road and Coast Trail but there will not be any closures of either the road or trail.

Limantour Road is a busy traffic corridor where the chance of vehicle-related ignition is high. If a major wildfire occurs, Limantour Road will play a key role in firefighting tactics by providing staging areas and anchor points for burnouts.

Assisting the Point Reyes National Seashore Fire Crew will be fire fighters from the Golden Gate National recreation Area, Marin County Fire Department and the Bolinas and Inverness Fire Departments.
