The National Park Service at Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area plans to conduct prescribed burns in three locations beginning the end of March. The burns will be in the following areas:
· Marcus Island 40 acres (in campground)
· Kettle River Arm-20 acres (between campground and base of hill)
· North Lake Roosevelt Resort (south of resort 20 acres near hwy)
Ignition dates are expected to occur from the last weekend in March to mid-April unless weather conditions are not within prescription. Weather parameters to be met include temperature, relative humidity and wind speed. Sufficient moisture in surrounding fuels must also be present. If fuels are too wet or dry, the burn will be canceled until a later date when conditions are favorable. Ignition is expected to occur over 1-2 days per burn unit area. Some smoke will be seen and smelled in these areas for a few days following ignition. Firefighters will put out smoke for several days following burn and will patrol areas as needed.
The goals for conducting these prescribed burns are to decrease twigs, brush, dead needles and leaves adjacent to campgrounds to reduce the risk of fire spreading to neighboring private residences and lands.
