The week of May 21, NPS fire crews will conduct several small prescribed fires, burning piles of brush that were gathered by various work crews. These brush pile are being burned to help prevent wildfires in areas where brush has accumulated.
On the Nevada side of the park the small pile fires will be done in washes around the Lake Mead Fish Hatchery, Fire Wash, Grapevine Wash, and along the Boulder Beach. On the Arizona side of the park, the fires will be at Pigeon Wash near the Tassi Ranch.
On Monday, if the weather conditions are adequate, NPS fire crews will start these controlled burns at Boulder Beach on the Nevada side of Lake Mead. All of the brush piles are in small localized areas but the smoke will be visible in the park, and at times, near populated areas outside of the park.
Federal Fire Restrictions went into effect in Southern Nevada on May 15. These types of controlled prescribed fires are allowed during this period of fire restrictions to control wildland fires.
