"Marin on Fire - Preparing for the Next Urban Wildfire", an educational film recently produced by Fire Safe Marin, will be on view during Fire Prevention Week, October 7 - 13, at the Bear Valley Visitor Center in Point Reyes National Seashore, and the Marin Headlands Visitor Center in Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The film will also be shown at the Red Barn Classroom at 12:00 noon, Tuesday, October 9, during the lunchtime Brown Bag Seminar Series at Point Reyes National Seashore.
"Marin on Fire" is 23 minutes in length, and includes 4 segments which demonstrate how fire resistant building materials, removing vegetation hazards, landscape design, and neighborhood strategies, can protect lives and homes during a wildfire. The National Park Service provided partial funding and two advisors to the project.
Fire Prevention Week is traditionally the week that includes October 8, the day on which two fire disasters occurred in 1871. The better known event was the Great Chicago Fire, in which more than 250 people died, 100,000 were left homeless, and property loss totalled $200 million. Less well known, but even deadlier, was the Peshtigo Fire in Wisconsin, which consumed 1.2 million acres of forest, destroyed 16 towns, and killed an estimated 1,200 people. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), has been the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week since 1922.
The Bear Valley Visitor Center is open daily from 9:00 to 5:00. The Marin Headlands Visitor Center is open daily from 9:30 to 4:30.
