Vehicle Removal from Red Canyon Scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2008

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on April 3, 2008. It is reproduced in full below.

On Monday, April 7, East Rim Drive will be temporarily closed between 7am - 9am and again in the afternoon between approximately 2- 5pm.

A 120 ton crane will be traveling from Colorado National Monument's East Entrance Station to Red Canyon on Rim Rock Drive to remove a car from the bottom of Red Canyon. The crane will take up both lanes. Cars and bicycles will not be permitted in this section of closed road.

Anyone commuting from Glade Park should use Little Park Road as the Monument's East Rim Rock Drive will be closed between the East Entrance Station and the DS Road Turn Off to Glade Park while the crane is traveling. The road will have to be closed late in the day when the crane heads back down the east hill but the time is dependent on how long it takes to recover the car.

The only way to be sure of not getting caught in this road closure on Monday is to use Little Park Road.

Visitors may travel along Rim Rock Drive from the west entrance as far as Red Canyon Overlook but they may not continue east on Rim Rock Drive throughout Monday's car removal operation.

The Monument staff will be handing out flyers at the gates in the days preceding this closure and posting this information in Glade Park.

These road closures apply to cyclists as well as to motorists.
