Everglades National Park Declares Mustang Corner Fire 100% Contained
The Mustang Corner Fire, which began the morning of May 14, was declared 100% contained on June 4 at 1800. Fire crews from around the nation assisted Everglades Fire Management contain the fire at 39,465 acres. A Type I Incident Management Team oversaw the operations of the blaze when it exceeded the capabilities of local officials. The Park reassumed control of the fire on May 25, when crews began focusing their efforts on mop up and rehabilitation. The fire has been flown daily to monitor hammocks still smoldering in the interior part of the burned area.
Crews are being kept busy with daily lightning activity creating the need for increased smoke patrols and two initial attack fires. The Dogwood fire is out at five acres and the DOF 214/136 fire has been contained at 123 acres.
