The National Park Service (NPS) is soliciting input from the public on the proposed update of the Fire Management Plan for Craters of the Moon Monument and Preserve (CRMO). The NPS is required to have an approved fire management plan for each unit in the National Park System that supports burnable vegetation. The current fire management plan for Craters of the Moon National Monument (53,400 acres) was approved in October 2000 but does not include Craters of the Moon National Preserve (410,000 acres) which was added to the National Park System through Presidential Proclamation 7373 in November 2000 and Public Law 107-213 on Aug. 21, 2002.
The fire management plan provides a framework for Monument and Preserve managers to use when making decisions concerning wildland fire management. Wildland fire management includes the use of prescribed fire, wildland fire use, mechanical fuels reduction and suppression tactics. The proposed fire management plan update will address new issues since the Monument’s expansion in 2000. At this early stage of the planning process for the fire management plan update, the NPS would like you to consider what issues we should address and any potential environmental impacts related to implementing fire management alternatives.
