(Corpus Christi, Texas)-Superintendent Joe Escoto announced Padre Island National Seashore will implement a seasonal speed limit of 15 miles per hour from mile marker 5 to the Mansfield Channel from April 1 through July 31, 2009. The speed limit change reflects the limit of the State of Texas and will provide visitors a safe and enjoyable beach experience during the summer season, a popular time for recreational beach activities. The speed limit change will also ensure the safety of the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle during the peak of the nesting season. A reduction in the speed limit will facilitate the detection and decrease the chances of injuring nesting sea turtles. Sea turtles cannot and will not move for an approaching vehicle, thus increasing their chances to become crushed.
Visitors should notify a Park Ranger or Turtle Patroller immediately if they find a nesting sea turtle, or call 361-949-8173, extension 226. A variety of factors including diligent patrols, safe driving practices and visitor reports are vital in aiding the Park with the protection of endangered turtles and
their eggs.
