Officials at the Gateway National Recreation Area have announced a new operating plan for the visitor parking lots at the North Channel Bridge located off Cross Bay Boulevard in Howard Beach, Queens. Currently the area is open 24 hours, but starting May 14 the parking lots, picnic area and the shoreline will be closed to all visitors from 11 p.m.-5 a.m. Officials have instituted the new regulations in an effort to increase visitor safety, to protect the area’s natural resources, and to cut down on the refuse that’s left in the area by late-night visitors. Anyone entering the area during the closed period will be subject to summons or arrest.
